Know About Agarwood
- Agarwood (also known as Gaharu in the South East Asia, Oud in the Middle East, Chen Xiang in China, Jinkoh in Japan and Agar in India) is a highly valuable aromatic dark resinous heartwood of Aquilaria species.
- This fragrant wood is created when Aquilaria trees are wounded and infected by fungi, producing resin as a defense mechanism.
- Agarwood is a resinous part of the non-timber Aquilaria tree, which is a highly valuable product for medicine and fragrance purposes
- To date, there are a total of 21 Aquilaria species which have been documented and 13 of them are recognized as the Agarwood-producing species.
- Agarwood has been widely used as therapeutic perfumes, traditional medicine, religious purposes and as an aromatic ingredient.
- With thousands of years of known use, and valued across Muslim, Christian and other communities, Oud is also highly revered in seminal texts and prized in Middle Eastern and South Asian cultures for its distinctive fragrance, so utilized in colognes, incense and perfumes.
- Oud was one of Prophet Muhammad’s صلى الله عليه وسلم favored scents along with Musk and in some reports Ambergris. From all the scents it is reported that Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم liked Oud and Musk the most (Bukhari S.K vol 1 p 584). It is reported that He صلى الله عليه وسلم would apply scent to his beard and hair (Bukhari S.K vol 1 p 589).
